My Maiden Golf (Ad)Venture in Aruba
Once my dad had gotten our Memorial weekend holiday booked three weeks in advance after reading about Aruba and its world class 18-hole championship golf course on the net, he couldn‘t stop talking about it. My mother, she started her packing!. She had this valise on the living room couch into which she would keep adding things to take with her, and she nagged us to do the same.. My father would conveniently pretend to be deaf. You see, he didn’t want to let on that he was planning to spend a major portion of his time on the 18-hole championship golf course!
We stayed at a luxury resort in Aruba with its own 18-hole championship golf course. After unpacking, my parents, my sister Selena, and I went to the restaurant. My brother ordered from room service. It was so obvious that Dad wanted to rush off to the 18-hole championship golf course but poor fellow, he wanted us to have a good time too. After lunch, Mom wanted us all to go to the beach. My brother wanted to play video games in the room. I was just plain bored, some family holiday indeed. It was decided that after an hour at the beach, Mom and Selena would spend the rest of the day together, while I would go with Dad.
So off we went, with me as my Dad’s caddy. I was glad my friends were not there to witness my utter misery, or so I thought. My Dad was on cloud nine and tried to educate me on the intricacies of golf and talked about how he had always wanted to play on an18-hole championship golf course .He said golf was all about concentration, focus and coordination. I tried my hand at it and realized it was not all that hard. Before long, I was actually enjoying my day at the sprawling picturesque golf course and was quite surprised when darkness fell. The next day too we paired off and with Dad by my side I was rapidly improving my swings.
Today I’m in my 40s, I have my own family, and I have managed to save some money to come to the very same 18-hole championship golf course in Aruba and enjoy some quality tee time with my son. I’m going to teach him everything I learnt from you. Here’s to you Dad.
