There are many different trends to furnish your living space and various trends are so similar that its difficult to categorize a room or Decorating style at times. Hopefully the following glossary of interior Design trends will help you understand them. Remember that you could furnish in a manner that pleases you, whether it fits a style or not.
Art deco styles appeared from 1925 through the late 30’s and was a combination of different modern trends of the time. It is a very rich style that emphasized on energy and line. The lines used were detailed as opposed to the plain straight lines of a missionary or arts and crafts design. art deco is epitomized by solar images, stripes, grill shapes and collections of lines. Representative materials used where often inlaid woods, stainless steel, aluminum and lacquer.
Country Design has expanded into offshoots including Country Cottage, American Country, French Country, English Country and Sun Country. Today American Country refers to American heritage with mix and match furniture, simple fabrics, a focus on family and comfort often there is a lot of of pale red, white and blue. The American country style took elements from and focused on farm lifestyles common elements included roosters, cows, geese and other typical barnyard animals. The muted red, white and blue have morphed into country blue, rose, and a cream.
The Mediterranean style is very popular today it comes from areas north of the Mediterranean Sea like Spain, Greece and Italy. Many people call this style contemporary Spanish they are the same style. The wall coverings in this style are typically heavy with texture and a faux finish is used the colors that are rich and bold. Elaborate and furniture is common, and typically fairly short. There arent a lot of sharp edgesas most pieces have round edges. Mosaic tiles are frequently used and deep colors are used, frequently natural earth colors are seen but turned up a notch in complexity.

To figure out what style suits you, start by looking at design websites to find rooms you like, then look for things in common in the spaces you like. Is there a color family that look better to you, do you like wood, plastic or metal furniture? Do you like fussy details and collectibles or do you like empty spaces? Does firm furniture please you or cozy chairs that you can flop into? Start categorizing your preferences and then study interior design styles to see which ones contain your choices. Once again though, the most pleasing design styles and furniture are ones that are made of the taste of the homeowner so dont feel trapped by definition, love the place you live in.
